The Secret To A Luxurious Home
Do you want your home to feel luxe and expensive? Do you want your space to spoil you, and take you away from the real world?
You can have a luxurious home, no matter your square footage or budget, as long as you adhere to this one principle:
Less is more luxe.
The one thing that all high end spaces have in common is just that: space. There are fewer objects present per square foot, and each one is very intentionally chosen.
That doesn’t mean that luxury equals minimalism. There are quite maximalist spaces that feel extremely expensive. But even in a maximalist style, it’s important to give breathing room to each object, and to place it carefully in context with all the other objects.
No object, particularly a purely decorative object, should be chosen in a vacuum. An object can be cute, beautiful, or interesting on a white background, but just become clutter when it’s placed haphazardly in a home.
So how do you pare down your decorative objects and create a luxurious space?
First, take everything decorative out of the space. Leave behind only essential furniture and objects that are stored for utility (ideally behind doors or in containers).
Next, look at each object individually to be sure it’s something you truly love. If it’s something you don’t feel strongly about, something someone gave you but you hate, or something that brings up bad feelings from the past, it’s not something that belongs in your home!
Then, create a “store” for yourself. Lay out the objects by type so that you can browse your own personal decorative inventory. You may want to use a dining room table or folding table for the smaller items.
Then and only then, place one object at a time in the space. Start with the larger items (side tables, lamps, art) and move down to smaller items. After you place each item, stand back and look at the whole room. Does this room feel complete to you? If yes, stop, no matter how many objects are left in your decor “store”! If no, place one more object.
You may be very surprised at how much decor is left over when you realize that your space is complete and feels luxurious. Most of my clients are! At that point, you have a decision to make about the objects that are left. You can use then in other rooms of your home, or you can choose to let them go. Both are equally valid options, as long as you’re making that choice intentionally and not just keeping things as a default.
How else do you make your space feel more luxe?
